The fifth season started off very well as Scully's cancer started to take a toll on both our heroes. Yet, they prevailed and the ensuing season was a lead-in to the much anticipated X-Files movie filmed in the summer of 1997 prior to the fifth season.

The episodes did not necessarily follow a straight flowing pattern, but the consipiracy became more and more showcased as the film's opening came nearer.
