Okay, this is a little segue from the main movie review, but I thought that this particular scene was highly important in the movie. It shows just how much their trust and friendship has evolved in the five years spent together investigating the unknown and the conspiracy. Also, it was a big turning point in how the producers of the show have perceived their relationship and the logical direction it most likely will take.

Of course, we need to recap the scene:

Scully shows up at Mulder's doorstep with the most dejected look she has ever shown. Mulder senses the hearing didn't go well, so ...

Mulder: "What's wrong?"
Scully: "Salt Lake City, Utah. Transfer effective immediately. I already gave Skinner my letter of resignation."
Mulder: "You can't quit now, Scully."
Scully: "I can, Mulder. I debated whether or not to even tell you in person..."
Mulder: "We are close to something here! We are on the verge --"
Scully: "You're on the verge, Mulder. Please, don't do this to me."
Mulder: "After what you saw last night, after all you've seen, you can just walk away?"
Scully: "I have, and I did. It's done."
Mulder: "I need you on this."
Scully: "You don't need me, Mulder. You never have. I've just held you back. [pause] I gotta go."
[Scully goes out into the hall and Mulder follows her.]
Mulder: "You want to tell yourself that so you can quit with a clear conscience? You can, but you're wrong."
Scully: "Why did they assign me to you in the first place, Mulder? To debunk your work, to rein you in, to shut you down."
Mulder: "But you saved me. As difficult and as frustrating as it's been sometimes, your goddamned strict rationalism and science have saved me a thousand times over. You've kept me honest. You've made me a whole person. I owe you everything, Scully, and you owe me nothing ... I don't know if I want do this alone... I don't even know if I can. And if I quit now, they win."

Mulder finally sees the unthinkable: Scully is voluntarily leaving him. His emotions have already been shaken up with the closing of the X-Files, the burning of their office, the impending OPR hearings and then this exchange with Scully. So Mulder tells Scully that he needs her to feel whole or complete, both as an investigator and as a person. In essence, he is admitting that her presence is vital for his own existence. Now that is deep! But it is very important to note, because even though Mulder has saved Scully countless times and was lost without her after her abduction, he had never *spoken* these types of feelings to her. It's a revelation and a maturation on both the part of Mulder and writer/creator, Chris Carter.

Scully is obviously overwhelmed at the honesty Mulder displays towards her. Tears fill her eyes, and she doesn't care that he sees them. She knew her decision would affect him as much as it did her, but not to this extent. Her emotions are also being overwhelmed. They hug for a moment, and she kisses his forehead. There is a long pause as they hold each other for what seems like an eternity. It's very sweet and definitely reminiscent of the hallway scene in "Memento Mori."

When he looks up at her and clasps her neck with both hands, she does not think anything of it rather than just pure affection from Mulder. But as she feels him pressing her face towards him, she realizes just how strong Mulder's affection for her really is. His gaze towards her is the most serious he has ever shown her, and Scully does not resist in any way. In fact, she moves a little closer to him to the point of no return. The moment seems inevitable as their lips are ever so close, but...

...a bee decides to come out and ruin the moment. What is interesting here is that the moment was very much evident in both their minds. Maybe the scenario that they were in was not exactly what either of them would consider romantic, but it's not as though they go to Paris or Rome every week and romance is in the air. But they did reveal their deepest longings to each other, and if the bee hadn't stung Scully, I have no doubt that they would have had the most passionate kiss in screen history.

When she suddenly breaks off the kiss, Mulder immediately says, "I'm sorry," thinking that he did something wrong. Of course, he does not yet realize that she was stung. Mulder shows a very strange look on his face as though part of him regrets what he almost did or possibly that his adrenaline was running so high that he felt the pressure instantly released. Whatever the case may have been, he seems to be slightly embarrassed at his uncharacteristic flow of emotions. Scully does not appear to mind at that point, but it really does not matter. The bee sting is her main concern, and Mulder realizes it as well.

The scene is definitely a turning point in their relationship, because words and intended actions were flowing where none had ever been mentioned before. Though they are famous for their non-verbal communication, love is not something that can be easily ignored particularly when that person you love may not know it, because it was never mentioned!

Anyway, back to the movie review.
